The reference number identifies the exact model and therefore the market value. It is on the warranty card or certificate and, on many models, engraved between the lugs at 12 o'clock. With the reference, a buyer can give a realistic estimate in advance.
Box, warranty card, receipt, service records, extra links and tags: a complete watch ("full set") usually achieves a considerably higher price than one without papers.
Many sellers want to "freshen up" the watch before selling. But every polish removes material and changes the case edges. Collectors prefer watches with honest signs of wear over over-polished cases.
A manufacturer service can make sense, but costs time and money and doesn't always pay off before a sale. Get advice first: an expert buyer factors the service need transparently into the offer.
Look at the prices your model is listed at on major watch platforms. Keep in mind: asking prices are not selling prices, and a dealer has to factor in inspection, warranty and reconditioning.
Private sales via classified ads carry risks of fraud, fake transfer receipts and unsafe meetings. Selling to a specialist shop with a fixed location and immediate payment is much safer.
Don't just compare the amount but also the transparency: does the buyer explain how the price is arrived at? Is the offer binding, or is it suddenly renegotiated after the inspection on site?
